Analysing Final Destination From a Vedic Perspective
Death has a design — a pattern. Even if one succeeds in escaping the pattern, death creates a new design for that person.
That’s the basic premise of almost all Final Destination movies. The characters keep running away from death, and Death — with a capital D — keeps on chasing them. It — with a capital I — takes them all away one by one.
It seems futile to avoid death. And one of the characters, in part 1 of the series, says exactly that. If death is inescapable then why run from it? Let it come! This, according to my opinion, is the most philosophical moment in the entire series.
Yet, when death comes near, even the wisest of philosophers can’t avoid the greed of running away from it — even if he knows that he will be alive for maybe one or two minutes extra — not more than that. That’s how addictive being alive is…
For a Believer In Vedantic Philosophy, Final Destination Is Hardly a Horror Movie
If you are a believer of Vedic philosophy, Final Destination might seem boring to you. That’s because the concept of death — with a small d — is quite different. In fact, if you pick up Chandogya Upanishad or even the Gita- you’ll find that there is actually nothing called death.
For the sake of simplicity, we will not get into the topic of Vedic scriptures revealing that we are all part of the same Brahman that engulfs the whole Universe — that created the whole universe. Just know that the soul that we have within us is part of the same Brahman.
Now, according to the Hindu philosophy, the soul never dies. Once the human body perishes — the soul just ‘wears’ a new body! After this new body perishes, the soul rides another body… And hence, in India, call the phenomenon the cycle of birth and death. If you feel optimistic just by listening to this, let me do the honours and break your bubble. It is this cycle of birth and death that is more scary. Imagine coming to this earth again and again, suffering from all the misfortunes — again and again and again. You are trapped in life! Hence, none of the characters in the Final Destination dies — they keep on taking birth again and again. And that’s the actual tragedy. They are all a victim of the design of Maya — the illusion that we call life.
